Mi vuelo a Islandia hizo escala en Londres, el agente de migración hizo el comentario: “¿por qué vas a Islandia? Es demasiado caro”… Lo sorprendente fue que un habitante de Londres, que es una ciudad con una moneda tan fuerte, pensara que “Islandia es caro”. Aterrizando en Islandia en la madrugada pedimos un taxi hacia el airbnb; y sí, efectivamente Islandia es caro, nos cobró más de 120 USD por 40km. ¿Vale la pena? Totalmente ¿volvería a ir? Sin duda.

My flight to Iceland had a layover at London, the migration agent said: “Why Iceland? Is too expensive”… The shocking part was that as a London citizen, where the currency is so strong, he had the idea of “Iceland is expensive”. After landing in Iceland at midnight we asked for a taxi to take us to our Airbnb; and yes, we realized Iceland is expensive, the cab charged more than 120 USD for 40km. Is that worth it? Yes. Would I visit Iceland again? Definitely.

 

Empecemos con un dato curioso sobre Islandia (tiene muchos datos curiosos).  Ubiquémonos con Islandia que en inglés es Iceland = tierra de hielo; y ubiquemos a Groenlandia, en inglés es Greenland = tierra verde. Se supone que cuando los vikingos descubrieron las islas no querían a sus enemigos en Islandia, entonces le pusieron Iceland, para que todos fueran a “colonizar” Groenlandia, que en realidad está cubierto de hielo. Pero la realidad es que llegas a Islandia y TODO ES VERDE. Kilómetros y kilómetros de llanura. Hay cientos de cataratas, glaciares, géiseres, aguas geotermales, playas negras y cientos de atracciones naturales  por lo que necesitarías muchísimo tiempo para conocer todo. Si tienes un espíritu aventurero, Islandia es para ti.

Let’s start with a fun fact about Iceland (they have many). Let’s put in the map both Iceland and Greenland; when the Vikings discovered those islands they didn’t want their enemies to visit Iceland, that’s why they call it that way, so everyone went to Greenland to settle down even though Greenland is covered with ice. But when you arrive to Iceland everything is GREEN. Miles of prairie waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, geothermal waters, black beaches, and thousands of natural attractions, you will need lots of time to visit everything. If you have an adventure soul, Iceland is made for you.

La ciudad es realmente pequeña, el país entero solo tiene 300,000 mil habitantes y su principal actividad económica es el turismo. Hoy en día 1 de cada 3 habitantes en Islandia es un turista. ¡Impresionante! Hace unas cuantas décadas, cuando se estaba construyendo la carretera, el gobierno (y el pueblo) creían en los elfos, así que no querían molestarlos invadiendo las montañas, por lo que las carreteras las rodean, lo que ocasiona que las distancias sean LARGUÍSIMAS.

The city is pretty small, the whole country has a 300k population, and their main economic activity is tourism. Nowadays 1 of each 3 people in Iceland is a tourist, impressive, right? Few decades ago, when the highways were made, the government (and the people) believed in elves, they didn’t want to disturb them by invading the mountains; so the highways surround them, which causes that distances are SO LONG.

 

Seguramente habrás escuchado comentarios o leído artículos acerca de que Islandia es uno de los países más felices del mundo, y en mi experiencia: es cierto. Ves a los niños felices jugando en la calle sin nadie que los cuide, andan solos en el transporte público y caminando hacia sus casas. La gente es muy amable y no sientes inseguridad en ningún momento. Además del contacto con la naturaleza, parece sacado de un cuento de hadas, imposible no ser feliz en un país así de hermoso.

You may heard comments or read articles saying Iceland is one of the happier countries on Earth, in my experience: it’s true. You see happy children playing in the street by their own, walking in the streets, and taking the public transportation to home. People are really friendly and you will never feel unsafe. Besides, the contact with nature feels as in a fairy tale, it is impossible not being happy in such a beautiful country.

 

¿Cuál es el mayor contra? Para mí fue el frío. Soy una persona muy friolenta y cuando visité Islandia aún era verano, el clima oscilaba entre 5 y 10 grados. Cuando hice mi maleta no me preparé para lo que me encontraría al llegar; he estado en climas de 10 grados en Europa y no lo considero algo extremo. En cuanto aterricé en Islandia supe que los había subestimado, ¡no iba preparada! Tuve que comprarme otros guantes, bufanda, gorro e iba con muchas capas de ropa, sobra decir que al día siguiente me enfermé. Tengo entendido que todo el año hace frío, su verano es de 12 grados máximo, claro que la gente de ahí está acostumbrada. Llegué a ver a chicas en bikini junto al lago cuando yo no podía sacar las manos de mis guantes. Así que cuando vayas por favor, prepárate y cúbrete lo más que puedas. Nos explicaban que 10 grados en México no son iguales a 10 grados en Europa ni a 10 grados en Islandia por la ubicación de los meridianos y su proximidad con los polos.

Does it has any cons? For me, it’s the cold, I’m always cold. When I visited Iceland it was summer, the weather was around 5 to 10 degrees. When I made my suitcase I wasn’t prepared cuz I thought “10 degrees? That’s not tragic, I have been in cooler weather in Europe” But I regretted that thought when I landed in Iceland, it was FREEZING. Next day I bought another scarf, a beanie, gloves and I was wearing lots of layers of clothes, I got a cold a few hours later. I was explained that it’s cold all year long, their summer is 12 degrees tops, of course Icelanders are used to that, I saw girls in bikini next to the lake, when I wasn’t able to take my hand out of my glove. When you visit Iceland, be prepared, cover yourself. A guide explained to me that it’s not the same 10 degrees in Mexico, 10 degrees in Europe or 10 degrees in Iceland, due to the location on the meridians and the proximity to the pole, it gets colder of course.

Puedo compartirles que la mejor época para ir es agosto o septiembre, cuando acaba el verano y aún no es tan frío; además son las fechas donde empiezan a aparecer las auroras boreales, nosotras pudimos ver una en el taxi de camino al aeropuerto, los mejores 220 USD que he pagado en un taxi.

I can share with you that the best time to visit Iceland is August-September, summer is ending but it’s not extremely cold, and you may be able to see some aurora borealis, we were able to see one in the cab, on our way back to the airport, the best 220 USD I have ever paid in a cab!
