Marruecos

Pocas deben ser las personas que no han escuchado sobre las maravillas de Marruecos. Tenía muchas ganas de visitarlo, el mundo árabe siempre se me ha hecho fascinante. Del continente africano solo conocía Egipto y me enamoró, así que me quedé con ganas de más, y debo decir que Marruecos no me decepcionó.

Few should be the people who haven’t heard about how marvelous Marrakech is. I really wanted to visit it; the Arab world has always been so fascinating to me. I had only been at Egypt in the African continent, and I loved it, so I decided that I needed more, and I was not disappointed.

Mi primera recomendación es que revises el clima, yo soy una persona que prefiere el calor sobre el frío, pero el clima en Marruecos es extremoso, llegamos a más de 40grados. Resulta que la ciudad se paraliza durante el día porque es casi imposible hacer cualquier actividad; todo inicia a las 6 de la tarde, a esa hora las mujeres van a los mercados y las calles están tan concurridas como si fuera el medio día.

My first recommendation is: check the weather, I actually prefer heat over the cold weather, but hot weather at Marrakech is out of this world! We were over 40 degrees! It turns out that the city is paralyzed during summer because it’s almost impossible to do any activity; everything starts at 6 pm, that’s when women go to the markets, and the streets are as busy as if it were noon.

Los mercados son bellísimos, muchísima música, vida, cosas por comer y ver; pero no te recomiendo comprar mucho, difícilmente encontrarás precios justos y generalmente la calidad será bastante mala. Solo si encuentras algo que de verdad te enamore, pues diviértete, regatear también es parte de la experiencia árabe.

Speaking about markets, they are truly beautiful, lots of life, music, things to eat and see; but I do not recommend making lots of shopping, it will be hard to find fair prices and usually the quality is quite bad. Only if you find something that really makes you fall in love, then have fun, cuz, bargaining is also part of the Arab experience.

¿Dónde quedarte? Por favor, busca un Riad, son casas grandes de 6 u 8 habitaciones que las adecúan para que sea un “hotel”. Es la forma más bella de estar en contacto con los marroquíes; además, la decoración siempre es bella. Normalmente tienen albercas, balcones, mosaicos coloridos y cada esquina muy instagrameable, yo me quedé en uno vía airbnb.

Where to stay? Please, look for a Riad, they are big houses with 6 or 8 rooms that are adapted to feel like a “hotel”. I think it’s the perfect way to be in touch with the real Moroccan people, plus, the decor is out of this world. Usually they have pools, balconies, colorful tiles and every corner is Instagram-worthy, I found my Riad via Airbnb.

Probablemente no te dé mucho tiempo de conocer todos los templos increíbles que hay, pero te recomiendo hacer una lista para recorrer lo más posible. Muchos lugares están cerca entre sí, puedes caminar (si tienes ganas y condición). Yo hice un trato con un taxista que estuvo a mi disposición 2 días, me llevó a donde quise por un mejor precio (incluso al aeropuerto). A ellos les conviene porque tienen cliente seguro y a ti te convendrá porque te saldrá más barato y no tendrás que estar cazando taxistas.

Probably you won´t have enough time to visit all the museums and temples, so make a list so you can organize yourself. Good thing is, that everything is so close to each other, you can walk (if the weather helps and if you have the time and condition). I made a deal with a taxi driver, he was at my disposition for 2 days, took me to the places I wanted for a better price (even to the airport) it works for them because they have a secure customer and it works for you because it will be cheaper and you won’t need to hunt a cab.

En Marrakech uno de los paquetes turísticos más famosos es cuando te llevan al desierto del Zagora (en Sahara) para quedarte una noche ahí. Hay personas que se quedan varias noches en el desierto (no me lo tomen a mal, yo amo el contacto con la naturaleza), pero también soy demasiado dependiente de la tecnología, y eso incluye tener agua caliente, así que con una noche tuve. Aun así, admiro a aquellos que se quedan varias noches en el desierto. El camino es precioso y también van haciendo paradas en lugares importantes que valen la pena ver. Para adentrarte al desierto necesitas hacer el recorrido con el camello casi una hora, y después llegas a la tienda común donde cenarán y convivirán todos, y después tu propia tienda (o compartida) donde dormirás. También hay baile en la noche, tambores, canto y mucha paz al ver ese cielo estrellado, incluso, probablemente te toquen estrellas fugaces, como a mí.

In Marrakech one of the most famous tours is the one that takes you to the desert at Zagora (in the Sahara), you can stay 1 night, but I met people that stayed for a week! Don’t get me wrong, I love being in touch with nature, but I’m also really attached to technology and that includes Wi-Fi and hot water, so one night was more than perfect for me, (even tough, I admire the ones that stayed for a week). The road is adorable, and it includes some stops in amazing sites. To get into the desert you will need an hour by camel, and then you’ll arrive at the common tent where you will have dinner and share a little time with everyone; and then there’s also your own tent where you will sleep. The night is magical, there’s music, drums, singing and dancing, and lots of peace when looking at the beautiful clear sky full with stars, and maybe you can see a shooting star (I did!)

Si te interesa el mundo de la moda, sabrás que en Marruecos está la otra casa de Yves Saint Laurent, donde pasó mucha parte de su vida, después de París. Te recomiendo conocerla, sus jardines son hermosos y además cuenta con un museo donde conocerás más sobre él y entenderás muchas de sus inspiraciones y como lo llevaron a crear (y revolucionar) sus colecciones. Uno de mis diseñadores favoritos sin duda, que tanto hizo por la moda que hoy en día conocemos.

If you’re interested in fashion you will know that the other house of Yves Saint Laurent is at Morocco. I highly recommend going there, there’s a breath-taking garden and a museum, you will know more about him, and you will understand lots of his inspirations, which led him to create (and revolutionize) his collections. One of my fav designers ever, I admire him because he made big and important changes for the fashion we know nowadays.

Hay muy pocos países a los que regresaría después de conocerlos. Esta vez en Marruecos estuve pocos días y me quedé con ganas de visitar más ciudades. Así que se quedó en mi lista de países a los que quisiera volver muchos días más.

There’re few countries that I would go back after visiting them. This time I stayed there really few days, and I wanted to visit more cities, so it remains in my short list of countries that I want to go back to.
