Perú

Si alguien me hubiera dicho lo maravillada que iba a quedar con el mundo Inca al conocer Perú, se hubieran quedado cortos. Resultó ser un destino al que ahora recomiendo a todo mundo, un amigo australiano me dijo que su ciudad favorita es Cusco, no le creí, hasta que la visité; y ahora quizá también sea de mis ciudades favoritas (junto con Barcelona y claro, Ciudad de México).

Peru has become my total favorite destination, I have been telling everyone to go and visit this amazing country A.s.a.p., I have an Australian friend who once told me that his favorite city was Cusco, I didn’t believe it, until I visited it; and now, it probably has become one of my favorite cities (along with Barcelona and of course Mexico City).

No quiero aburrirlos con mi itinerario ni tampoco pretendo ser guía de turistas contándoles todo lo que aprendí sobre Perú, pero si quiero explicarles un poco de todo lo que conocí para que, en el momento que se decidan visitarlo, vayan preparados de todas las maneras posibles.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with my itinerary, neither do I pretend to be a tourist guide, by telling you everything that I learned from Peru, but I do want to explain a little bit of everything I discovered, so when you decide to visit you are as prepared as possible.

Nuestro viaje fue de 10 días, ¿fue mucho? Quizá, si estás corto de tiempo, menos días te bastarán con Lima y Cusco. Pero aun así, creo que hay mucho por conocer en Perú, otra riqueza cultural que incluso si te quedaras meses, seguirías enamorándote.

We had a 10 days trip, was it too long? Maybe, if you don’t have that much time, fewer days will be enough with Lima and Cusco; but even though, I think there’s a lot to know at Peru, lots of cultural richness that you can stay for months and still falling in love with it.

Lima es la única capital de Latinoamérica ubicada en la costa y nunca llueve ahí. Puedes caminar tranquilamente por las zonas turísticas y encontrarás comida deliciosa en cada rincón. Tiene increíbles museos, y sí, me parece muy cosmopolita porque cubre cualquier tipo de necesidad: artística, natural, tecnológica o religiosa.

Lima is the only capital in Latin America located in the coast, and it never rains there. You can walk peacefully in the touristic areas and you will find amazing food on every corner. It has amazing museums, btw, and of course it’s cosmopolitan, it covers any type of need: artistic, technological, natural, religious, etc.

De Lima, nos fuimos a Arequipa (la ciudad blanca) en avión. Me parece que uno de los problemas que más turistas enfrentamos en Perú es la altura, pero los locales te ayudarán para que no sufras por eso. Lo que ellos toman es té de coca (si, la hoja de coca) que te explican, es medicina natural, AL NO MEZCLARLA CON NADA. Y te la dan para que la mastiques contra el mal de altura, también en hoteles y restaurantes ofrecen té de coca, que para ser honestos, te ayuda totalmente a no sentirte mareado o sofocado.

From Lima, we went to Arequipa (the White City) by plane, let me tell you that one of the biggest problems that every tourist has with Peru it’s the altitude, but the locals will help you to fight with this problem, they drink Coca Tea, (yes, from the cocaine leaf) they say it’s a natural medicine, IF YOU DON’T MIX IT WITH ANYTHING ELSE. You can chew it or drink it on a cup of tea; to be honest, it really helps, and you will stop feeling dizzy.

Cerca de ahí, está Colca, que tiene grandes reservas naturales de Vicuñas, alpacas y de cóndores, que fuimos avistando en nuestro camino. Cuando vas recorriendo sus carreteras y ves las ruinas incas, de verdad empiezas a entender a estos últimos, el contacto que tenían con Pachamama (madre tierra), y con su religión politeísta en la que adoraban a dioses por cada creación. Es muy lógico con esas vistas impresionantes que tenían a su alrededor.

Close from there, is Colca, with natural reserves of Vicuñas, alpacas and condors that we were able to sight-seeing on the highway. On the road, I couldn’t stop thinking about Incas, how amazing was their connection with Pachamama (Mother Earth) and with their polytheistic religion, loving every god by their creation. It has so much logic if you think about the marvelous views that they had.

Posteriormente, en Puno, se encuentra el lago Titicaca, que es el lago natural más grande y más alto navegable del mundo; los lugareños hicieron islas artificiales con una planta llamada totora, la cual comen y luego la usan para los cimientos de su isla artificial. Con ello construyen sus casas e incluso los barquitos con los que se mueven de una isla a otra, es en verdad, una gran experiencia.

After that, at Puno, there’s Titicaca Lake , the biggest and highest natural lake in the world, and the locals built artificial islands with a plant called totora, they eat it and then use it for their houses and even to build boats so they can transport from one island to another, it’s truly a heartwarming experience.

La última ciudad que visitamos fue Cusco, y vaya que podría escribirles un post solamente de Cusco. Encuentras iglesias exquisitamente construidas en cada esquina, y la catedral es fascinante; puedes quedarte horas ahí y seguirás encontrando cosas nuevas que ver. Sus calles angostas llenas de locales, comida, artesanías y vida es algo visualmente bello. Claro que tienen su zona de artistas (muy estilo Monmatre en París) me quedé con ganas de más.

The last city that we visited was Cusco, and believe me, I could write a single post about this city. You will find churches exquisitely built in every corner, and the cathedral is huge; you can stay inside for hours and still you will find new things to admire. Their narrow streets full of stores, food, handicrafts and life is visually amazing. They have their artistic area (something like Monmatre at Paris) and I really need to go back there.

Ahí está Sacsayhuamán que fue una ciudadela que tenía templos por cada elemento: fuego, tierra, aire y agua; algo imperdible. Al visitarlos conocerás y entenderás más a fondo la cultura inca y como aplicarla a tu vida, aunque hayan pasado cientos de años desde la conquista, la ideología inca habla principalmente de la comunión del hombre con la naturaleza.

Then there’s Sacsayhuamán, it was a citadel with a temple for each element: fire, earth, air and water. You cannot lose that! You will understand more about Inca beliefs. Even though it was a civilization that disappear hundreds of years ago because of the conquer, the Inca ideology speaks mainly about the union of men and nature.

No había otra forma de terminar más que con Machu Picchu. ¡Uf!, de verdad me emociono solo de recordarlo. Es una ruta larga desde Cusco, así que tendrás un día cansado pero que valdrá totalmente la pena. Llegas al pueblo llamado Aguas Calientes que tiene un río y subes en camión hasta la Ciudad Perdida. ¿Es cansado? Algo, me cansaron más otras ciudades del recorrido, la altura de Machu Picchu es poca comparada con Arequipa; tuvimos un día espectacular sin nubes, que nos dejaban visualizar toda la ciudad.

Miren, de las maravillas del mundo, solo me falta conocer la Muralla China, pero hay muchas que me han decepcionado y otras pocas que me han dejado sin palabras. Afortunadamente, Machu Picchu no me decepcionó. Su majestuosidad, al pensar que existe desde hace miles de años atrás, es impactante.

There was not another way to end but with Machu Picchu. OMG! I’m still excited just by remembering it. It’s a long route from Cusco, it will be and exhausting day but will totally worth it. You will arrive to a little town called Aguas Calientes. It has a river and you will go up by bus until this Lost City. Was I tired? A Little bit, but I was actually more tired with other expeditions than with this one. Machu Picchu it’s not that high compared with Arequipa, fortunately we had an spectacular day without clouds so we had an amazing view of the place.

You see, from the World’s Wonders, I’m only missing the Chinese Wall, and I have felt disappointed with some wonders and other ones have left me speechless. Machu Picchu was one that I loved. It’s majestic, and if you think about its thousands of years behind, it’s quite shocking.
